Freezer door not completely closed overnight #913984

Asked August 14, 2025, 10:13 AM EDT

This is a pull out freezer a the bottom of the refrigerator. It was almost closed, except that the door didn't click into place last night. Ice in ice cube trays is completely melted. Frozen peas in package feel semifrozen. Sorbet is partially melted and partially in solid chunk, but I haven't touched the chunk to see how solid it is. How can I tell if I need to discard any food? Freezer is completely full. I don't have a thermometer to find out the temp when I opened the freezer. I hope that you can answer promptly so that I know if I need to buy different food for today and the weekend.

Typically if foods have ice crystals and are as cold (40 degrees Fahrenheit) they are safe to keep.

Thanks for that information.  Because I needed to leave the house soon after I discovered the problem, I didn’t have time to examine everything in the packed freezer and closed the door securely then.  If some of the sorbet in a 3/4 empty container was still solid, can I safely assume that crystals were present there and in the various other types of food?

Seems like you were able to observe enough before running out of the house this morning.

Staying solid/seeing ice crystals likely means it stayed under 40F. We'd expect a half-full freezer to hold at a food-safe temperature (under 40°F) for 24 hours. As a reference, a full freezer up to 48 hours.
