Planting fall veggies #913890

Asked August 13, 2025, 1:23 PM EDT

Hello- I love that this resource is available! I am a new-ish gardener and would like to try my hand at fall veggies. I looked through the planting calendar and identified broccoli, spinach and romaine lettuce as veggies I'd like to try, but when I called around local garden centers, no one is selling them. Sounds like they may be available later this summer/fall. But per the planting calendar, those veggies need to be planted soon (romaine up to end August, spinach up to 1st wk in Sept, and broccoli up to 1st week of August). Can you provide some clarity on this? And any other suggestions much appreciated! Thank you! Alla

Expert Response

Area garden centers and nurseries tend to stock up on fall veggies around Labor Day (sometimes a couple weeks earlier), and that timing likely centers on when the wholesale suppliers/growers have their inventory ready to ship. If the growers are starting some of those veggies from seed, they need lead time to get them germinated and of transplantable size by the time gardeners are looking to plant them in gardens, so the wholesale nurseries probably are actually planting now (or did so recently) and are waiting for the seedlings to mature just enough to tolerate shipping and to be ready for a gardener to take them out of the pot for planting (so delicate roots can handle that process). Nurseries probably have restocked their seed packet selection by now (or will do so shortly) if you wanted to start your own plants from seed instead of buying transplants pre-germinated by the nursery. Late summer or fall restocks on seeds tend to be less diverse than what nurseries will stock for spring, but they will focus on veggies grown for fall harvest like the leafy greens and crucifers.
