How to propagate a linden tree #913871

Asked August 13, 2025, 12:04 PM EDT

We have had several requests about how to propagate a linden trees. We'd like to include a link to best practices in the Frequently-Asked-Questions for Master Gardener Plant Clinics - but did not find resources one UME or neighboring states Extension pages. Can you help us with a resource we can routinely provide for MG's and Clients?

Expert Response

The most successful propagation technique might depend on the species of Linden (American, Tilia americana; European, Tilia cordata; Silver, Tilia tomentosa; etc.). N.C. State notes that European Linden is propagated "mostly done by grafting stem cuttings onto rootstock," and for Silver Linden, by "seeding, layering, grafting, or chip-budding on proper rootstock."

The University of Florida has some propagation notes for both European and American Linden.

A publication by Oklahoma State Extension notes that American Linden is best propagated by softwood cuttings (as opposed to semi-hardwood or hardwood cuttings, when cuttings are used, as opposed to other propagation methods).

We don't have a specific resource to share for teaching how to graft tree cuttings, especially for specialized techniques like bud-grafting that tend to be used for Lindens, such as reproducing cultivars to preserve their unique genetics. (Be advised that propagating any patented cultivars may be illegal.) Iowa State University has web pages outlining the general techniques for specific types of cuttings (softwood, semi-hardwood, and hardwood); here is the relevant page if Linden requires softwood cuttings to be taken: Propagating Shrubs and Trees from Softwood Cuttings.
