Currant Berry Bushes #913855

Asked August 13, 2025, 10:34 AM EDT

Hi there, I planted black currant berry bushes 5 years ago, and every spring they blossom like crazy, and then nothing. Never does a single berry actually grow. I've tried cutting them back and removing old canes. They're located in mostly a sunny spot, with some morning shade. Any ideas about getting them to produce fruit? Thank you for your help! :-)

Expert Response

Hi- possible causes for the lack of fruit:
  • Most black currant varieties are not self-fertile. Two different varieties are required for cross-pollination.
  • Heat stress if plants are in a south-facing, full-sun location
  • Spring frosts that kill flowers.
  • Lack of pollinators.
  • Black currant fruits mostly on 1st and 2nd year wood. Prune out older canes at the crown (base).

Hi Jon,

I appreciate your help!  It's possible I don't have two different varieties.
