What lawn weed is this #881168

Asked August 12, 2024, 2:00 PM EDT

I’m submitting photos of broadleaf weed that is resistant to weed killers. My plant identifier app cited St Augustine. Google cited Dallies grass. How do I control?

Ramsey County Minnesota

Expert Response

"Weed killers" for lawns are usually broadleaf herbicides. The photos you've sent are of a grass weed.  Neither St. Augustine grass nor Dallisgrass grow in our area.

I can't be sure because the blades are chopped up in the photos, but it looks like crabgrass to me.

If that's the case, keep mowing it now to keep the seed population down. Then put down a preemergent herbicide next spring, around May 1.  Since crabgrass is an annual, that will end your problem, although you will have to apply the preemergent every spring.
