Tamarack Tree growth #881039

Asked August 11, 2024, 3:08 PM EDT

There’s a growth on the bark of a Tamarack tree in my woods in the Eastern U.P. Do I need to treat the tree? How should I treat the tree. Should I be concerned about the other tamaracks on the property?

Expert Response

Hi Janet,
That looks like a fungus growing on the tree, which likely indicates that the tree is in decline.
That said, how does the crown of the tree look? Are needles/leaves green and healthy looking? Did all branches produce leaves? Is the tree growing in the forest, or in a yard setting?
Given the advanced nature of the growths, it is likely that they have been growing and producing spores for some time. So, the other tamaracks on the property have likely been exposed to the fungus. There is no treatment for wood rotting fungi so it's best to just let nature take its course.
Thank you,
-Julie
