Expert Response

Hi Kathy,

Those are duff millipedes, also known as bristle millipedes. They do not pose a threat to you, pets, furniture, or anything in your home. These arthropods commonly invade homes in summer to escape the heat. To prevent their entry, look for unsealed gaps around your window wells. These gaps can also occur around doors/vents. Small gaps can be sealed with caulk, large gaps may require a professional.

The millipedes already in the home can be removed through vacuuming, and/or with glue boards. But preventing their entry is the most effective, long-term solution.

Furthermore, these arthropods look remarkably similar to dermestid beetle larvae. If you notice an infestation of similar-looking critters in other parts of your home (e.g. pantries, closets, etc.), please reach out again. Dermestid beetle management is different than that for these harmless arthropods.

Let me know if you have further questions.
