Need action plan for Red Thread outbreak this summer #880973

Asked August 10, 2024, 8:11 PM EDT

My soil test was run recently. I am on track with the recommendations and met them last year, but I have an outbreak of Red Thread. Should I consider some other action to combat that? My lawn was grown from seed long ago. We think it is rye/fescue. I'm interested to hear any suggestions you might have.

Good Morning,
Red thread can be mistaken for dollar spot in turf as the patchy type kill is very similar. This is one of those diseases you need to get on your hands and knees to check out to make sure you know that it is red thread.  The best red thread control in home lawns is adequate nitrogen fertilization. That would mean 3-4 lb. nitrogen per 1000SF annually.  Fungicide applications are usually not necessary in dealing with red thread; a fertilizer application will often help the turf outgrow the damage.

I hope this helps.  Thanks for using our service.
