creeping red fescue #880838

Asked August 09, 2024, 12:43 PM EDT

I have a beautiful kentucky blue grass lawn but it is being invaded by patches of what I am told is creeping red fescue. Is there a weed killer that will help control this type of grass.

Hello Michael,

Can you send some pictures of the grass that you believe is creeping red fescue? We prefer not to offer advice lacking a confirmation of what you have. Here is a good reference with guidance of how to take pictures for grass identification. https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/grass-photography-tips-for-id-help-us-help-you

Having said that, there are only two “weed” grasses that change the answer. If the intruder is creeping bent grass or annual bluegrass, there is a product (such as Tenacity) that will selectively kill them and not harm Kentucky Blue Grass. All of the other weedy grasses cannot be selectively killed in a stand of Kentucky Blue Grass.

For grasses like creeping red fescue, you have two basic options for removing the undesired grass – Physical removal (dig it out) or chemical removal (apply a herbicide to kill it). Once the grass is removed, you will need to spot-seed or place sod in the area to fill in the bare spots. If you seed, when you choose a seed mixture to reseed, be careful to choose a seed product that has exclusively bluegrass cultivars so you don’t find yourself in the same situation again. You can reseed or sod now. https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/six_steps_to_fall_turfgrass_establishment

If you choose to sod instead of seeding, you can find sod at your “big box” home improvement store. Make sure you call ahead and find out what day they receive sod shipments, because you will want to buy it as fresh as possible.

Your option for chemical control is a non-selective herbicide (such as glyphosate) that will kill the undesirable grass and desirable grass as well. In this case, you will want to completely spray the undesirable grass and limit overspray onto the desirable grass.

Hope this helps.
