Soil treatment after potato blight #880670

Asked August 08, 2024, 10:06 AM EDT

My potato’s got early potato blight this year. I cut off the leaves and disposed of them in the trash. Over time. The plants kept growing but still had it. I cut all the plants off and disposed of them and now have a clean bed. What do I need to do with my raised bed soil to treat it and kill the fungus? This is in a 30” raised bed so digging out all the soil would be difficult.

Expert Response

It is recommended that your potatoes be rotated to a different location and that same location not be used for tomatoes or peppers as they are all the same family.  If you cannot rotate your plants, and do not want to try something else there, all I can suggest is you mulch heavily under your plants as they come up next year to avoid soil splashing up on the leaves.  https://extension.umn.edu/vegetables/growing-potatoes#diseases-293863
