I have frequent flooding in one area of my backyard which is killing the lawn. Is there a way to fix this?

Expert Response

Some additional information would be helpful in order to determine how to assist you.

In the picture it is hard to tell if the area is a low-lying area in your yard or if it is on a slope that is also causing some erosion. Is water puddling in this area or flowing through it?

If it is puddling, how long does it take for the water to soak into the soil?

Have you done a soil test of your lawn? If so, please forward us the test report or provide us the Report No. (top right of the report). If you haven't done a soil test, this would be necessary in order to understand the composition of the soil in your lawn. Proper soil composition is necessary in order for all plants to thrive, including lawns. You can pick up soil test kits and instructions in the Master Gardener office at the Durham County Extension Office at 721 Foster Street, Durham, NC 27701. If it's after hours there is also a box on the north side of the building where you can obtain the kit and instructions and also return the sample after you have collected it.

Please contact the Durham County Master Gardeners the answers to these questions and if you have additional questions.
