Looking for design ideas from scratch (from dirt) #880656

Asked August 08, 2024, 8:31 AM EDT

We have a space we would like to convert into a cottage garden in front of our house approximately 26' x 5' that is currently just dirt after construction of a South facing garage. There is a horizontal window on the far right side facing the street and a big overhang so less rain. Around the corner to the right is a shady triangular area 12' x 12' that faces SE with a small overhang. We would like to brainstorm with you. Below you see some of the shady triangle under an overhang, then the 26' garage facing south. And how do we get the soil tested? Hoping to plant some this Fall. Thank you!

Hi Jane,

This page has good guidance on planning a garden:

You are wise to start with a soil test. You can have one done for about $20 at the University of Minnesota Soil Testing Lab. They will ask you what kind of garden you're creating and give you recommendations on how to improve the soil. Here's their website:

After looking at these websites and their links, if you have questions add to this email. Thanks!
