Clay soil #880650

Asked August 08, 2024, 1:34 AM EDT

I Live close to lake Erie; the soil is to be clay. I want to grow flowers. What proportions of sand, peat, lime should I add to the clay? Also, I am wondering about additions of topsoil, mulch based soil, or a compost base soil I've seen in bags. Would these work as well?

Hello Laureen. Here is an article about clay soils which will get you started I hope.
https://extension.oregonstate.edu/news/diamonds-clay-soils-are-forever  Notice how cautious this advice is about chemical amendments. Taking time to pile leaves and grass clipping in the next few months on the area you want to improve is their take on it. In addition compost and in the spring manure are recommended. A cover crop planted soon would be very beneficial.
There is a saying about clay soils: sand to clay throws your money away. Clay to sand is money in hand. The article mentions this concept.
A soil sample would give you valuable information as well. You might try the soil test lab at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for their instructions. If you go online for information add “edu” or “extension” to your word search. Get back to us with additional questions.
