While working in the yard I noticed these large flying insects look like a wasp. In addition, it was also noticed that the insect was capturing another insect and take it into the bored hole. What kind of insect is this and how do I get rid of it. Are these insects Eastern Cicada Killer. See pictures:

Expert Response
Yes, this is an Eastern Cicada Killer wasp. They are native insects that only use cicadas as the food source for their young. (Adult wasps instead eat nectar, sap, or other sources of liquid sugar.) These are solitary wasps, which means that they don't share a communal nest the way yellowjackets or hornets do. Despite this, multiple females can use the same area of land to nest in if conditions are appealing to them, so multiple burrows occurring in one yard are quite common. They ignore people and will not be inclined to sting (and males patrolling the area for mates or rivals to chase are incapable of stinging). We don't recommend insecticide use as it should not be necessary, but that would be the only option if you needed to remove them. (Trying to fill-in the burrows or wet the soil enough to discourage them might not work if burrows have already been dug.) The activity of the adults will wane considerably or be finished by late August or sometime in September.
