Need Recommendation for dwarf tree - Denver #880602

Asked August 07, 2024, 5:10 PM EDT

We live in Denver and would like to plant a tree that only grows to about 7 - 12 feet tall.  We want a deciduous tree and nothing with prickly leaves or that bears fruit that will drop all over our front patio.  We will have full western sun almost all day.  We were thinking of an Eastern Redbud (from the north), but in a dwarf variety.  Would that be a good option and do you have any other suggestions?

7-12 feet is pretty small for a tree, even a dwarf variety, so options are limited.

The Ace of Hearts redbud variety would fit this requirement. Please note that Japanese Beetles may be attracted to this tree, so if they are a problem in your yard, be aware. Once established, Red bud can be pretty drought tolerant, however it will need to be watered well in the first year or so while it gets established.

Plant Select has trialed a couple smaller trees that they recommend for the Front Range, although they may grow taller than you prefer. One of those is the Hot Wings Maple, but this can grow up to 18' and you may not want the samaras (seeds) which could drop on the patio.

If you aren't familiar with Plant Select, it is a collaboration between CSU and the Denver Botanic Gardens that trials and suggests plant varieties for the Front Range. On their website they have a search tool that allows you to search for plants that meet your specifications and are highly recommended for our area. You can check out this tool here:

Would you consider growing some taller shrubs? Some can be pruned into a a tree-like shape. Silver Fountain Butterfly Bush  or Rose of Sharon can be grown as a small tree, for example.
