Nutsedge, Creeping Charlie #880565

Asked August 07, 2024, 2:36 PM EDT

I have a lawn now filled with what I have been told is Nutsedge. How do I get rid of it? If I do, do I need to reseed? What time of the year would I do any of this? Do I fertilize? What weed killer works best on Creeping Charlie? Thank you so much!

Expert Response

Hi Deborah,

Thank you for your submission! Because questions are handled by staff and volunteers with different areas of expertise, please ask one question per submission as this will expedite the responses. I am happy to help with the nutsedge questions, but please re-send your questions about fertilizer and Creeping Charlie.  Thank you!

As for nutsedge, there is a lot of helpful information on this UMN Extension page: https://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/weed/idlist.html#Sedge (Scroll down to the "Sedges" link). You can remove the sedge by hand, but chemical control strategies may be easier and more effective. There are specific options linked in the article. If using a herbicide, remember to always read the labels prior to use and follow the directions attached to the container you are using - the label is the law.

I hope this helps, and we look forward to your other question submissions!
