Sick City Sprite Zelkova? #880537

Asked August 07, 2024, 12:34 PM EDT

I may need to find a reputable arborist for a 5.5 year old "sick" City Sprite Zelkova. I am asking questions of someone here because some folks have told me that it is normal for the bark on a Zelkova to split and shed. However, there are now some additional issues. I hadn't been doing a good enough job of watering it in the past, so started watering it a lot in early July when I first noticed the bark splitting. I started watering it twice a day for a total of 40 gallons using two 5 gallon buckets with a hole in the bottom of each. I recently slowed it down to 10-15 gallons once per day. I also put wood chips as mulch around the base of the tree to 24" out. Otherwise, the tree looked healthy. But I noticed yesterday that some of the leaves are drying up and fall off as I touch them. Also, one new "shoot" has some sort of blight on the leaves. The bark that is splitting is in the trunk as well as some branches; however, the trunk inside the splits seems to be filling in or "expanding". I really don't want to lose this tree. The bark only started splitting this summer and has been smooth until this year. I have read on the internet that many times a tree can be saved that has split bark, but there are so many splits, and now some of the leaves have some sort of blight on them and others are "crunchy" and some with tiny holes, like something might be eating them. This is not widespread - yet. What should I do now? Thank you for any help or recommendations you can give me.
