Daylilies againg #880531

Asked August 07, 2024, 12:08 PM EDT

We planted a large daylily bed about 20 years ago, many colors. Got them from a nursery in Owatonna. Typically, they explode like fireworks in July. For several years now, they have bloomed sparsely if at all. We mulch around them every few years. Wondering if we need a specific fertilizer or soil amendment.

Expert Response

Daylilies multiply, but they don't move away from each other. Dig up the bed, separate them as individuals or groups and replant them. You may have to slice through the roots and destroy a few in the process, but there is no other way I am aware of to spread them out. Additional information.

I'm not asking about spreading them. They have not been blooming for a few years now.

They are not blooming because they are crowded. The center of the clump may not be dying back yet, but is likely to happen. Read the previously sent Detroit News link.
The following web page is long, but if you read several of the postings, they all recommend digging up and dividing daylilies to encourage bloom.
