Planting wildflower seeds this fall #880448

Asked August 06, 2024, 5:19 PM EDT

Hello, we are wanting to plant native wildflower seeds on a slight incline this fall. There is currently sparce groundcover, mostly clover. Do we need to cover the seed with straw or mulch after we scatter it? Is it best to wait until spring? Thanks for your help.

Jane,

Thank you for your question.

This sounds like a wonderful project.  Since you describe the area as "sparse" it will save you the chore of pulling out the existing weeds.

Here is a link provided by Colorado State University. It covers all of the important aspects including site preparation, weed control, seeding and maintenance for a successful wildflower area.

Good luck with your project!
