mud dauber wasp nest #880400

Asked August 06, 2024, 1:09 PM EDT

At my house in rural Cook County, on 4 south/southeast facing windows I get mud dauber nests. They are operating casement windows that have a margin around the exterior. The wasps crawl in there and build their nests. It's a bit of a mess every year. Is there a specific time of the season when they will be more active in this building process? I would like to stay on top of it and remove them before they're well established. Is there a deterrent that may work, a type of spray, preferably natural, that could be applied? I don't want to get the house sprayed by a pest management operation. Thank you for your reply.

Expert Response

Thank you for your question.

Although you did not include a picture, I strongly suspect that you are observing a Black and Yellow Mud Dauber (Sceliphron caementarium). It is our most common mud dauber. Other than being a pest and nuisance, it is completely harmless unless extremely provoked. Moreover, they do no harm to buildings other than make an unsightly mess. You have certainly experienced this. They construct nests from June through August. For this reason, I would suspect you will shortly be seeing less activity from them and their presence should diminish. Once the female wasp constructs the nest, she deposits a single egg in the nest. Having completed this task, she disappears and dies. They are solitary insects in that they do not construct nests as a group. I do not know of any deterrent that will prevent them from building these mud nests. Towards the end of the summer, eggs and larvae will overwinter in these mud nests. Your best proactive action would be to knock these mud nests down now with a long pole and discard them. This may reduce their incidence around your house in 2025. See the following for more information including remedial actions:
