Oak wilt and shrub suggestion #880380

Asked August 06, 2024, 11:29 AM EDT

Hi. We have been hit hard this year by oak wilt. About 15 trees are dead. What is the recommended way to dispose of and how long can they be left standing or on the ground? Also, need a suggestion for a hedge along our garage. It is north facing and doesn’t get much sun. I have been nursing alpine currant in that spot for 20 years and they don’t do well.

Good Evening Cindy,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

If you scroll down through the information, it discusses what to do with the wood.

Many oak trees have suffered from the drought the past few years. Were the trees watered the past few seasons? Are you sure they are dying of oak wilt? Here is a link to the plant disease clinic where you could submit a sample for a small fee: https://pdc.umn.edu/
