Hackberry tree issues #880337

Asked August 05, 2024, 10:42 PM EDT

Our Hackberry trees that were planted last fall have developed some issues in the past two-three weeks. They both started having their green leaves turn to a light green -yellow color. The one tree's leaves turned brown and curled and then the tree lost all of its leaves. The other Hackberry has retained most of its leaves, but the leaves appear light green yellowish color. What insights/information can you provide about our Hackberry trees? Thank you.

First problem is that the tree is planted too deep.  I should be able to see the root flare. Pull the dirt back away from the trunk until you see the root flare.  For more details see the website.

I suspect that the trees are not getting enough water.  Shedding leaves is the first sign of stress.  They may regrow leaves if given enough water.  Until the ground freezes continue watering.

Because they are heat and water stressed, they may have picked up a disease as well. Leaf spot disease are rarely fatal.  Clean up all dropped leaves now and in the fall to prevent disease from overwintering in the soil. See the following website for additional details on what to look for.

Mulching around the tree will help avoid nicks from grass trimming equipment.  Mulch will help retain moisture for tree roots and prevent grass from taking up all the available moisture.

Hope this helps!
