That is a bad break. We would suggest you hire a certified arborist or licensed tree expert to assess the tree. The broken limb will need to be removed and if it is very large, or above your head we would suggest a professional for safety reasons. The rest of the tree will need to dry and callous over the exposed inner wood. It has the potential for insects and disease to enter in the healing process but it could live for a number of years longer. The professional will be able to help suggest removal if you think it is in an area that could damage structures or be a safety concern.
