Can this tree be saved? #880275

Asked August 05, 2024, 1:58 PM EDT

Part of a red oak tree just came down today. Can the part that is still standing be saved or does it have to be chopped down? Sent this from my phone, but do not know if you got it.

Expert Response

Hi,

That is a bad break. We would suggest you hire a certified arborist or licensed tree expert to assess the tree. The broken limb will need to be removed and if it is very large, or above your head we would suggest a professional for safety reasons. The links provided will allow you to search for one in your area.

The rest of the tree will need to dry and callous over the exposed inner wood. It has the potential for insects and disease to enter in the healing process but it could live for a number of years longer. The professional will be able to help suggest removal if you think it is in an area that could damage structures or be a safety concern.

We're sorry for your tree damage!

Emily

Thanks for the information.
