Black walnut - small circles around core #880257

We had a black walnut tree that was dropping walnuts on our roof last year; so we took it down this week.
Any idea what caused the ring of small circles around the center dark ring? It is on the main trunk, but not at the base of the stump and not at side branches.
Two lowest sections (approx 8’ each) do not have small dots; central leader does. Doesn’t seem like side branches do.
I have a section if interested. Wood is still on property; although neighbor plans to pick up in a couple days.
Thank you!

Hi Colleen,
I would guess the tree was injured at some point at that spot. It's a bit high in the tree, but could have been bb holes, or a sapsucker that drilled holes into the living wood at the time?
It's interesting for sure! And likely caused by an external factor of some sort.
Hard to know without researching the history of the tree.
With hopes the neighbor is planning to use the wood for carpentry - and can make something of those stains!
Thank you,
-Julie
