Wilted Lilac bushes #880229

Asked August 05, 2024, 10:24 AM EDT

We have a row of common lilac bushes (that bloom with purple flowers in the spring) in our back yard along the fence. We have some rocks (pebble-size) along the perimeter, but they are mostly sitting in dirt. This year, they developed a mildewy appearance on the leaves and then, about 3 weeks ago, they started to look "scorched" or brown around the perimeter of the leaves. It started with just a few leaves, but now it has spread to almost all 20 feet of them and the leaves are now falling off. They are mature plants that have been there for over twenty years. Is there anything we can do to treat them? Is this a root rot, blight, or something else? Or have they simply died? Is there any harm in pruning them down to the root as they are pretty ugly at this point? Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Angela,

This may be a really bad case of powdery mildew. See this page:

Sometimes plants have more than one problem. In this very wet summer, many lilacs are getting bacterial blight this year. This usually doesn't kill the plants, but they will look bad for awhile and maybe until next year.

Here's some helpful web pages:

Both of the links above suggest ways to manage blight, including raking up and disposing of fallen leaves and, when it is dry, pruning to open up the plants and allow better air circulation. These same techniques can help prevent powdery mildew.

With these very old shrubs it may be a good idea to do rejuvenation pruning in the spring, before leaves sprout. Removing the oldest stems down to the ground would increase air circulation. But be aware that if you shorten branches in the spring, you'll be cutting off next year's flowers. Lilacs set the buds for their flowers in the previous summer.

Hope this helps.
