Squirrels eating all of my tomatoes #880209
Asked August 05, 2024, 8:31 AM EDT
In years past, Squirrels ate an occasional tomato, but this year they are eating every one at first blush of color and multiple green per day as well. I returned from a 10 day vacation last week and immediately place rubber snakes around (I move them daily) and two bird feeder/squirrel watering bowls in the yard. I have a squirrel feeder and food arriving today. My geriatric lab is unfortunately to old to patrol the garden.
I have a total of 10 plants that are trellised and currently 10 feet tall.
Do you have any suggestions before I resort to calling a rodent/pest service to relocate the critters that have clearly learned to love my prized tomatoes.

Expert Response
We don't think you need to relocate your squirrels- more will just take their place.
What you have begun to do will be welcome. Plants and wildlife in most of central Maryland are stressed and suffering through unusual and prolonged high temperatures and concerning drought.
Often, fleshy, juicy tomatoes are eaten in summer because water is not regularly available. Supplemental water should help with tomato pilfering.
Next season, you could consider some fencing around the garden as well. Some people put wire fencing all around, including above.
