Identification Of Spider #880205

Asked August 05, 2024, 7:40 AM EDT

Hello,I am wondering if you can identify this spider. We see them every year in varying sizes and places but it seems like everyone calls them something different. House spider, grass spider, hobo spider etc. so I am hoping that you can identify it so that I can educate myself on the correct spider! In the one photo I used a cigarette butt to roll close to it for a size indicator (not the most accurate way but hopefully it helps!). Thank you so much! This really is an amazingly helpful service and I am very grateful to have it to use as a resource! I am not a fan of spiders due to some traumatic experiences throughout my life but I do like to be educated on what ones are around me and my family so I know when to worry and when to just have the heebie-jeebies lol! Thank you all again!!

Expert Response

Hello,
Thank you for your question. I will start with the caveat that I'm a horticulturalist, not an entomologist, but this looks like a wolf spider to me. They can get very large but are predominantly harmless to humans. Fun fact, the females carry her babies on her back, so if you see one that is distorted, it may be covered in numerous tiny wolf spiders. I hope that's helpful!
