Oh Rats!!! #880200

Asked August 05, 2024, 3:51 AM EDT

Hello OSU Extension Office, I have the beginnings of a Bumper Crop of Tomatoes, I've been growing a great Garden for 10 years. Then last year, Rats!! Rats started eating all my Ripe Tomatoes. I set up Traps and Rat Hotels they could enter with bait. I managed to recoup some of my crop. This year I set up traps early and Bait Hotels. Unfortunately they are back, and I am asking for advice in hopes I can find a solution before they wipe out my entire crop. Thanks in Advance. I am near old stage, so I am sure they have a decent population. Sam

Expert Response

Exclude rats and all the other critters who would likewise try to enjoy your tomatoes. I recommend hardware cloth with openings no larger that 1/2-1" squares, and use it to completely cage out (tops, sides, ideally stuck into the dirt to prevent under-digging). Chicken wire is pretty soft and chewable, so I wouldn't trust it to protect your harvest.
