Blue fescue 'Beyond Blue' with a sudden carbunkle growth #880191

Asked August 04, 2024, 10:23 PM EDT

I have six healthy blue fescue plants and one of the six has two or three interconnected growths in the middle of the plant. They seemed to appear quite suddenly. The fescue is part of a parking strip planting on a quiet neighborhood street. They are planted on the west side with drip irrigation and receive full sun after 1:00 p.m. No other plants are affected. I would appreciate help diagnosing the problem and suggestions for treatment. Thank you!

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Susan.  The growth appears to be a mushroom, but I am having difficulty with the content of the (assumably) cut open growth.  Tall fescues are known to have an endophyte fungus, which doesn't hurt the plant, but is toxic to cattle.  I can find nothing similar in blue fescue.  I suggest that you take this to the Extension office for examination.  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/clackamas

Good luck!
