Replace Fence with Hedge #880167

Asked August 04, 2024, 5:31 PM EDT

Is there a small evergreen hedge that can be used to replace my old wooden fence that borders two neighbors? This is a quarter-acre property within a small town. Sun to partial sun would be needed. Low maintenace would be preferable.

Expert Response

Hello Andrew, Thank you for your question.

I always recommend plants that are considered natives, for many reasons, including the fact that they are typically well suited to the local climate and thus can require less maintenance. They also help to support the local wildlife, including pollinators and birds, and are typically not considered invasive.

Because you would like evergreens, there are fewer options, but there are still some good possibilities. Here are a few to consider.

Hopefully something on this list will fit the bill. For additional ideas, the National Wildlife Federation has a handy website:  https://nativeplantfinder.nwf.org/Plants/Trees-and-Shrubs

Also, your county OSU Extension Office may have some suggestions:

Fall is a good time to plant your shrubs, as they will have better growing conditions than now, with the heat and low rainfall.

Very best wishes,
