container gardening #880160

Asked August 04, 2024, 4:15 PM EDT

Do you have resources for what plants do well in containers on a balcony in downtown Portland (Multnomah county) I used to have a big yard in SW Portland and now live right on the Willamette River with huge East-facing balconies. Need advice. Thanks

Thank you for your question, Nancy.  We don't have any resources as specific as what you need, but you might find this helpful:  https://retirement.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/container_gardening_august_2020_final.pdf

Most gardeners start their container gardens in the spring.  Are you wanting ornamental plants, edible plants, or a combination?  Are their weight or height restrictions in place?  If you can provide more information, we might be able to help more.  Thanks!

Thanks - yes, I know most people do this in the spring. I have just moved back to Portland from Warsaw (Poland) and would love some things that I could start now and would live over the winter (perennials, pot-shrubs, etc.) Just some color (and yes, green is a color.) No weight or height restrictions in place.

Thanks for any more input if you have it!
