Rhododendron pruning timing #880153

Asked August 04, 2024, 3:24 PM EDT

Recently moved into home about 1 month ago in Salem, OR. Been truing to get a feel for garden present. Believe this to be a rhohodendron. I've already gone through and deadheaded it. It was full of blooms. Want to prune/thin out to help control size given its location. Am I too late to do anything now? It appears to have already started next year's blooms. Wondering if I try and thin it out, allow better sun light and still preserve blooms for next year may be better than trying to control entire size? Not really sure what I'm doing but wondering your thoughts.

Expert Response

Dear Jared,

Thank you for contacting us about your rhododendron. It looks like a big, healthy shrub. Generally, rhodies do not require much pruning and this is not the time to do anything more than removing dead wood. If the shrub is really too large for the location, you might consider removing it and find a smaller variety.

The following information may help you. The third article is old but contains a lot of information about pruning in specific situations.

I hopes this is helpful. Please write again any time you have gardening questions.
