what are these ants doing? #880133

I noticed on new growth, at the tip of an apple tree branch, there were a dozen or so ants just... playing? that's all I could come up with. I couldn't think of any other reason for them to just keep running around endlessly... and not appear to do be doing anything else? I have a video, but it doesn't appear that we can upload videos?

Hi Michelle, thanks for the question.

Ants on your plants can indicate your plant has aphids. You have picked up and a common practice of ants. They feed on the honeydew of aphids and in return protect the aphids. Check out the attached picture that shows the aphids on your plant. Since aphids can cause problems like distortion and sooty mold it, is a good idea to get them under control.  Small quantities can be wiped off, larger quantities can be knocked off with a stiff spray of water. An invasion may require insecticidal soap, or neem oil sprays. Check out the following links:
