Bartlett Pear Growing Question #880131

Asked August 04, 2024, 12:53 PM EDT

Hello, I planted a bartlett pear tree this spring. It came in the mail as a grafted dormant tree. I am curious if the ways the new branches are growing are concerning or not? They are sprouting above the graft line so as I understand they aren't the root tree, but should be the pear tree growing. Is this normal for branches to grow from the bottom of the tree like this? Should I do anything to this or let it continue to grow as is? Thank you for the help!

Expert Response

Maybe let them go and see what happens.  I am concerned that there are no leaves towards the top of your trunk.

My app confirms that these are pear leaves.  I would say that your roots were good.  I would let it continue to grow this year and see what it does next year.  You may have to cut off the top at some point.
