Autumn fern has brown pods underneath leaves #880086

Asked August 03, 2024, 11:36 PM EDT

I have autumn fern that have been beautiful every year but this one. I am noticing for the first time multiple brown pods attached to the bottom of the leaves. At first I thought this was some type of seeding, but I am noticing one of the ferns is looking can of brown and moldy at the bottom. The other three ferns have the pods but look perfectly healthy. What is going on?

Expert Response

From your description, it sounds like you are seeing the reproductive structures under the leaf. Ferns don't make seeds but spread by spores released into the air to land on
a suitable surface, such as a moist protected area to germinate and grow.
