Arbor Vitae in Wasco Cty. (eastside of TD) #880077

Asked August 03, 2024, 8:48 PM EDT

We have a row of arbor vitae that has seen several deaths of individual trees over the last few years. A master gardener here in TD thought it could be phytothora root rot. She recommended removing them all especially due to their suseptibility to fire. She suggested another tree to replace but unfortuneately I didnt write down the name.... something like pititonia? Do you have any recommendations?

Expert Response

Cherry Laurel or Lilacs can both be good alternatives to arborvitae, much less fire risk, and grow well in our environment. Both will need some water and pruning as the get established.
