Hoe Pye Weed “Phantom” #880058

Asked August 03, 2024, 4:56 PM EDT

My Joe Pyeweed is crowding out plants next to it. Can I cut some stems down now (August) to give the adjacent plants (Coralberry) more room for this season? Can I dig out some of the roots in Fall or Spring for better growth next year?

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

Hi Kenneth,

Joe Pye is a tough plant. These plants love wet ground and are big this year. If you want to cut back stems to give other plants more sun and room, it will be fine.

I'll warn you that they can be hard to divide. If your Joe Pye has been there for more than a year or two you will need a sharp shovel to get through the root system. I've even used an axe on mine!

Hope this helps.
