Bacteria Leaf Scorch #880053

Asked August 03, 2024, 4:34 PM EDT

What are shade trees that are not affected by bacteria leaf scorch? I would like plant a shade tree to replace my 45 year old Pin Oak that’s in its third year with BLS disease. I live within 300 feet of the Palma’s River.

St. Mary's County Maryland

Expert Response

Pin Oak and Red Oak species tend to suffer the most out of the Oak species for Bacterial Leaf Scorch. The white oak species do still get some but not as severe.

List of species that are more susceptible and those that are less susceptible according to Kentucky Extension: https://eec.ky.gov/Natural-Resources/Forestry/forest-health/Documents/28.Bacterial_leaf_scorch.pdf

Black Gum seems like a good choice near the water. Try to stick to native trees as opposed to non natives like Zelkova or Chinese Elm that tend to be over planted and will not benefit wildlife as much.
