Remove rock around base and let grow naturally? #880010

Asked August 03, 2024, 10:16 AM EDT

I had rocks with landscape fabric underneather placed under one of my fir trees (I think it's a Sacred/Oyamel Fir from looking at the Types of Fir Trees diagram I found on your website) and would like to remove the rocks and fabric and let it grow naturally due to weeds growing in rocks. Will a fir tree grow lower limbs and vegatation on the ground if I remove the rocks?

Expert Response

Your fir tree won’t develop new limbs lower than the present limbs, nor will it send up shoots. If the limbs are removed to make it easier to mow for example they never grow back. Fir trees also cast deep enough shade to suppress weeds.
