Clover #880009

Asked August 03, 2024, 10:14 AM EDT

We have a lake home in northeast Minnesota. The backyard is mostly sunny, and the ground in sandy. It is mostly low growing weeds and clover with grass intermixed. I have tried killing off bigger weeds and planting grass seed with little success. Is it possible to just seed with clover? I don’t mind the clover as it is green and stays short. We also see a lot of bees, and would like to maintain that.

Hi Ken,

You can seed with white clover if you want. It's not as fussy about sprouting as grass seed is, and in my own yard I've found it pretty tough even with dog traffic.

In drought it may still need to be watered. Here's a couple pages about Dutch white clover, which is what many Minnesotans are planting in lawns.

Hope this helps. Thanks.
