White growth at base of lavender #880003

Asked August 03, 2024, 9:40 AM EDT

I've successfully overwinter a patch of lavender in my garden. This year I noticed thick white solid substance at the base of the plants. Before yesterday's rain. It looked more white. What is it and how can I treat? Should I remove these plants to prevent spread. Not all appear effected yet.

Expert Response

Hello Melissa, happy to help.

It's great that your lavender made it through the winter but it looks like the rains and poor drainage has done it in. Sorry, but I don't think there's much you can do with this plant.

If you want to try again, I recommend making sure the drainage is improved where you plant it. Ensure the area is dry before the ground freezes in winter and then pile on autumn leaves around it (surround it with chickenwire fencing to keep the leaves in place) to keep the roots from getting too cold and from being heaved out of the ground during winter's freeze/thaw cycles. Remove the leaves in early spring so the plant doesn't remain wet from melting snow.

Good-luck!

Thank your for your email. Could you provide information about what the white substance is. A name would be helpful.

Hello Melissa,

Unfortunately without a culture test, I couldn't tell you which fungus has taken over the roots. They appear as part of the decay process when the roots rot.
