DIY Weed killer #879957

Asked August 02, 2024, 5:03 PM EDT

Will a DIY weed killer ( 2c water, 1/2 c white vinegar, and 2 Tablespoons Dawn dish liquid, and maybe some salt) be harmful to a well-established juniper tree which is surrounded by the weeds? The weeds are a low-growing sort of ground cover.

Expert Response

Hello,

Extension Responders do not recommend using home remedies for weed or pest control. This is because the final outcome is not known, such as your question; will the mixture have a detrimental effect on the roots of the juniper? This is quite possible since vinegar is a non-specific herbicide, meaning that it could kill any plant that it sprays.

Commercial herbicides are approved by the EPA for removal of specific weeds and cannot be used for unlisted plants (off-label). It is therefore guaranteed to be used as directed on the label.
