You can prune to maintain a certain size but, in winter, you should be pruning way back and then allowing the rose to grow into the size you want. Light summer pruning (while deadheading to encourage continued bloom) will keep it at whatever height you. You’ll want to remove any dead or damaged canes. These cuts can be made close to the base of the plant. You will also need to remove any canes cluttering the inside of the bush. Canes that are growing horizontal or are crossing other canes need to be removed. Opening up the middle of the bush promotes air circulation and reduces the risk of disease.
