Diseased plant #879925

Asked August 02, 2024, 2:19 PM EDT

In a shade garden, I discovered 3 plants that appear stricken by the same condition. The one, a sedum?, had all the leaves fall off, but the flowery buds appear fine. The other plant, a mini hosta has brown spots. I tried spraying with Neem Oil but that didn’t seem to help.

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension. The problem I see on both of these plants are slug damage. It probably occurred a few months ago, and the browning around the holes indicate that. You can avoid slug damage on the sedum, if they were planted in full sun. It appears that it is planted mostly in shade. The hosta damage can be stopped if you pull some of the mulch away from the crown of the hosta, clean up debris around the plants and put out slug traps.
