It would be best to plant them as soon as possible and make sure they are well watered until they go dormant whether you water or mother nature does. Keep an eye on the amount of rain you get and supplement when needed.
If you're unable to get them into the ground the next best thing would be to sink the pots into the ground before the ground freezes. The last option would be to store them in a basement or garage where the temp is below 40 degrees and no lower than 30 degrees because in the winter their roots are subject to ground temps which remain around the freezing point when planted.
