Can you identify this insect and is it destructive to garden plants, ie. raspberries, apple trees, etc.

The insect in our photo is a Japanese beetle. The beetles are attracted to many plants, trees and shrubs. Damage is primarily on leaves but can include blooms as well. The least invasive method of removal is to drop the beetles into a container of soapy water. The beetles are less active in early AM and later afternoon. There are bug bags sold for trapping and these are not recommended. Below is a link that gives details on their life cycle and control.
