Trees Disease #879812

Asked August 01, 2024, 6:39 PM EDT

What is best treatment for the Sugar Maple in Adams County.  We have put iron stakes (4 N, S, E, W according to box instructions) in the yard previous fall and spring and will continue to try to feed the roots more iron. Some branches have no growth, severely damaged leaves and loss of leaves from hail storm in May.

Expert Response

Lisa,
Thank you for your question. From those pictures it looks as though that tree is potentially too far gone for treatments to be effective. Generally once trees have lost over 50% of their canopy the chances they will recover are slim.

If you wish to treat, you need to use a chelated iron with the formulation of EDDHA. Iron stakes typically are not in a formulaiton that can help maple trees.

If you wish to replace the tree you have a lot of options that are not susceptible to this issue.
See https://extension.colostate.edu/docs/pubs/garden/07418.pdf
and https://extension.colostate.edu/docs/pubs/garden/07419.pdf
for potential replacement options.
Let me know if you have additional questions!
