Pepper crisis. #879800

Asked August 01, 2024, 5:28 PM EDT

Hi there, my greenhouse peppers have a foliage condition that I can't find any information on. Soil is well balanced and most of the peppers are doing well, a half a dozen are experiencing tiny bronze depressions in the leaves that are moving through those plants really fast. I removed all affected leaves 3 days ago and there are as many again now. no damage to the fruit, affecting several varieties, no visible pests, organic garden and I have been growing peppers for 50 years - this is new to me.

Expert Response

Hi Donald,

The second photo looks very much like aphid damage and the larger bronze depressions could be a bacterial leaf spot from infected seed or chlorotic spot disease carried by aphids.

You should contact your Chautauqua County Extension office in Jamestown to arrange to have a plant sample tested for diagnosis.

Thanks for the response. There are no aphids to be found, lot’s of experience with them…. No insects day or night.  This looks really different from the bacterial leaf spot… just from everything I’ve seen on line, haven’t seen any pictures that look like what I have going on. Wondered if it was something new. So If I drop off a sample you will do a diagnosis and is that $5? Thanks again,  - D

I suggest that you contact the extension office for details on how to prepare a sample, the cost to have it diagnosed and the timing. I'm not sure what the procedure is for Chautauqua County Extension, if they have their own diagnostic lab or send the lab work out.
