Giant Sequoia and Driveways #879737

Asked August 01, 2024, 12:42 PM EDT

I have an, approximately 100' tall giant sequoia in my front yard that is starting to lift and split my driveway. If i redo my driveway can I cut one or two of the surface roots, which are causing the damage, without harming or killing the tree.

Hi Ray:

Thanks for reaching out through Ask Extension. I am happy to help!

Giant sequoia (and coast redwood) do not have a (dominant) taproot, but rather have lateral roots. It has been documented that some giant sequoia lateral roots can be as long as 100 feet! For this reason, it is advised that they not be planted near structures, driveways or sidewalks, or near septic systems.

Unfortunately, your options are to remove the tree, as more damage will increase over time. There are some recommendations to "lift" the driveway by repaving over the roots, but this does not seem practical to me or a very good long-term solution.

It may be in your best interest to consult a certified arborist for their input. Keep in mind, there is typically a fee for their service. You can find an arborist in your area here https://www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist.

Best of luck!

Thank you,

Dan
