Stink bug nymph on corn #879710

Asked August 01, 2024, 10:21 AM EDT

Hello! I found this insect on my sweet corn, and have so far narrowed it down to some type of stink bug nymph. I'm hoping to get an id and whether it is a garden friend or foe

Hi Theresa,

Thanks for sending such a great photo!

I agree with you -- this appears to be a stink bug nymph. My best guess is it's a Southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula

They are a pest to corn crops. This article from the North Carolina Extension has some good information on scouting for them and preventing damage: https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/stink-bug-scouting-guide-for-field-corn-in-the-southeastern-us

Good luck!
